The U.A.E. cabinet has accorded its approval for a memorandum of defense cooperation with Italy. The cabinet in its meeting on September 14 is understood to have taken the decision, the official UAE website, UAE Interact has reported.
The exact details of the memorandum were not immediately known. However, the Italian Defence Minister Antonio Martino had expressed his country's desire to boost defence co-operation with the UAE. In a statement during IDEX-2003 he had said co-operation between the two countries in the sector of defence supplies is excellent. " Negotiations between Italy and the UAE for the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding in the defence field are advanced," Martino had stated.
Going by previous reports on this subject, the cooperation between the two countries could include electronic war, flight trainers and certain air defence systems. The U.A.E. defense force has indicated an intensification of investments in electronics, training and simulation while that on weapons platforms such as ships, tanks and fighters may see a fall.
